The grooming process

How Does it Work?

Picture
For pets and pet parents, grooming can be full of uncertainty, especially the first couple of groom appointments. To make it as easy and transparent as possible, we've decided to lay out each step of a groom appointment, from booking until pick-up.

Booking
Try your best to book at least four days in advance of the day you need them to be done, as we can often get booked up almost over a week in advance.

When you book an appointment with us, you can request an appointment online or over the phone (360) 733-9274 option 1. Over the phone, the front desk associate will ask you about your dog, including breed, weight, length of hair, and any special conditions pertaining to the pet. They will also ask for your contact information, which is vital to the appointment as we will need to contact you when your pet is done being groomed.

Expect to receive e-mails and text-message appointment confirmations and reminders! You may opt out of these at any time.

Dropping off
*If you have a before-hours appointment, make sure to ring the doorbell on the left side of the door when you arrive so the groomer knows you're here and can check you in.

When you're dropping your dog off for their appointment, the front desk associate will check you in and have you sign a grooming waiver for your pet(s). As we are implementing a new waiver, the associate may walk through the waiver with you as you sign and initial it. Please be aware that if you refuse the sign the waiver, we must refuse your dog, as we may only groom dogs that are under our policy. If you're unsure of one of the waiver policies, feel free to ask the associate for an explanation.

The associate or the groomer will likely come out and pet your dog to make them feel more comfortable. Please let the associate know of any sensitivities the dog may have, including behavioral concerns that may make parts of the groom difficult (i.e. bad with nail trims, doesn't like the dryer, kennel-sensitive, leash-eater, food or skin allergies, etc). The associate or groomer will ask you about the haircut you'd like, including the trim on the body, legs, feet, tail, head, ears, and face. If you are searching for a very specific haircut, please bring in a photo so we can best visualize what you want done.

If your pet is overly matted, we may not be able to do the groom that you want, as at that point we will be more concerned with the pet's health and levels of discomfort, since matting is painful and a health hazard for your pet. At Bailey's, we value health and comfort over vanity, so we will shave the mats out. We will call you to inform of this if we do not catch it at drop-off. From there, you can decide whether or not you want us to continue with the shave and de-matting or if you will pick them up. Learn more about matting and how to prevent it here.

The associate will tell you about when to expect a call from them to pick up your dog. They will also stand at the front with your dog and watch you go, as dogs often will be more willing to trust us when they've seen their owner leave.

During the Groom
Your dog will be getting two baths, a haircut, an ear cleaning, and a nail-trim during their full groom. They will have shampoo custom for their skin and any conditions they may have. If you have a specific request for shampoo, you may let the associate know at drop off. They will have wash-out conditioner, and then a leave-in conditioner. We do use snacks to motivate dogs to sit, turn around, and get into the tub when necessary (or just because we love them) so if your dog has any diet concerns, including allergies or weight loss programs, please let us know so we can be cautious of snacks we hand out! We will also keep this info in your file to ensure we know for future appointments.

If any parts of the groom become too stressful for your dog, we may be unable to complete the groom. This is because often pushing a stressful situation can result in dire consequences, including but not limited to vomiting, seizures, cardiac arrest, etc. Our mission is to make it possible to have a happy, healthy, and clean pet. If this is the case, we will give you a call and accommodate you and your pet to the best of our ability.

Pick Up
Once the groom on your pet is complete, we will give you a call to let you know they are ready for pick-up! If you don't answer, we'll leave you a voice message and send you a text message, just in case you're in the middle of a meeting or appointment and are unable to answer the phone. Please pick up your dog within an hour of being called. If you cannot arrive within an hour, please give us a call so we can figure out how to best accommodate you and your pet.

At pick up, the associate will ring you up for the cost of your groom and then retrieve your dog from the back. If you are happy with the haircut and wish to have the same one done next time, we will make sure to put it in your pet's file. If you wish to have it different next time, we can put it in your dog's file so we know for next time, and have you discuss it with the groomer.

If we do not hear from you, and it has been over two and a half hours since we called, we have policies in place that allow us to add on extra charges to their groom as a daycare fee. If we do not hear from you, and your dog is left here after closing, we charge $1 per minute until your dog has been picked up to compensate costs of leaving the shop open. This is to discourage people from leaving their dogs here after closing, as it can be stressful on your dog.

Next time
If you're happy with your groom and groomer, we can book your next appointment from the front desk! If you have a groomer preference, we can ensure that you are booked with that groomer the next time you come in. Booking your next appointment at the end of this one is often wise because you're booking far enough in advance to get first pick of the appointment time! However, if you're unsure of what your schedule will look like that far in advance, we completely understand, no pressure. You can also book with us at a later time.

If you have any other questions on the grooming process, go ahead and give us a call or stop by in-store!
